Dirty Heads and Sublime with Rome
July 31, 2010 - The most anticipated show of the summer and for many fans, it was the show they had been waiting to see for over 14 years was finally here. Amongst the sweat drenched crowd and In true summertime fashion, the Dirty Heads and Sublime with Rome brought the groove and rhythm to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Saturday.
As the Dirty Heads took the stage, the pit and seating began filling up to see the band that has become one of the best new bands of the summer and 2010. The Dirty Heads didn't let anyone down. Jared Watson and Dustin Bushnell kept the rhythmic lyrics flowing as John Olazabal jammed out on the bongos and tambourine complimenting the beats Matt Ochoa was hitting out on the drums and David Foral was creating on bass. They kept the bodies swaying and heads rocking in the crowd as the unique creation of hip hop, alternative and reggae hit the ears of the crowd.
When Rome Ramirez walked on stage with the Dirty Heads, the theatre erupted with anticipation to finally see and hear the hit 'Lay me Down' which has quickly become the definition of the Summer of 2010. The song brought hands in the air as Dustin, Jared and Rome switched melodic vocals back and forth. 'Lay me Down' live, completely overshadows any version you could hear on the radio or CD. You are taken on the ride through the song with them as they jam out on their guitars, drums and tambourines and you cant help but be overwhelmed with the feelings of summertime fun.
The wait of 14 years was now over as Sublime with Rome entered the stage. In the faces of some, you could see their dreams becoming a reality. They had grown up on the music of Sublime and after the death of Bradley Nowell, thought they would never get a chance to see the music performed again. Rome Ramirez changed all of that. As many have said, his voice has an eerie resemblance to Bradley's and he was not there to let them down.
When Rome took the mic, no questions were left unanswered. The melodic jamming voice belting though the speakers could have easily been that of the late Bradley, however it was the voice of Sublime's new frontman. The surviving members of Sublime had even more to offer the crowd. Bud Gaugh wailed out on the drums Eric Wilson kept the beat flowing on bass, playing the music that defined a generation. They played many favorites like 'Santeria' and the crowd couldn't help but sing out lout with 'What I Got'. They made sure not to leave out 'Wrong Way'.
Rome Ramirez's voice has made a great and impressive addition to the reggae fusion sound of Sublime. With the Dirty Heads also along on the tour, they have created a matchup summertime concert that will be hard to supersede. They put on a great sold out show that will be remembered for years by all who were at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre last Saturday. If you missed this show, they still have a few more to go.
